Drederick Irving (born January 11, 1966) is a former professional basketball player best known as the father of NBA star Kyrie Irving, though he carved out an impressive legacy of his own. He starred at Boston University from 1984 to 1988, leading the Terriers in scoring for three straight seasons and becoming the school's all-time leading scorer in February 1988, finishing his career with 1,931 points (now third in program history) and earning a jersey retirement. After college, he played professionally in Australia for the Bulleen Boomers in 1992, where he averaged 30 points per game, and also had an unsuccessful tryout with the Boston Celtics. His personal life was marked by tragedy when his first wife, Elizabeth, died when Kyrie was just four years old, prompting him to raise his children while working as a financial broker on Wall Street. In a unique twist, Kyrie later signed his father to his Anta signature shoe line, marking the first time an athlete has signed their dad to a shoe deal.
