The South Florida Detention Facility, nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz," was a controversial, now-closed immigration detention camp that operated from July 2025 to June 2026 inside the Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, built on the site of a former jetport runway. Opened on July 1, 2025, with President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem touring the facility, the camp was spearheaded by Governor Ron DeSantis, who invoked a standing immigration "state of emergency" to seize the county-owned airfield and bypass environmental reviews. As the first state-run camp solely for noncitizens, it cost at least $1.4 billion in no-bid contracts and drew global criticism for its remote location, which sits in a designated DarkSky International park and on ancestral lands of the Miccosukee, Seminole, and Traditional peoples. By June 2026, all detainees were transferred and vendors ordered to vacate the site amid lawsuits alleging desecration of sacred lands, inhumane conditions, lack of due process, medical neglect, and the unauthorized removal of people to third countries. Human rights organizations and legal experts charged that the camp violated international law—including the ICCPR and UNCAT—because it lacked basic sanitary facilities, adequate medical care, and access to legal counsel, falling far short of minimum standards for humane treatment.
