The South Yorkshire Supertram is a tram and tram-train system serving Sheffield and Rotherham, currently owned and operated by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). Approved by the South Yorkshire Light Rail Transit Act 1988 and following years of planning, construction began in 1991, with the first line opening in stages starting in March 1994. Early operations struggled with a complex ticketing system and low ridership, leading to the network being privatised and sold to Stagecoach in 1997 for just £1.15 million, after which management changes boosted passenger numbers. In March 2024, the network returned to public ownership when the Stagecoach concession ended. A pioneering tram-train service, the first of its kind in the UK, commenced on 25 October 2018 using new Class 399 Vossloh Citylink vehicles. Today, the network spans 51 stations across four colour-coded routes—Blue, Purple, Yellow, and the Tram-Train (Black)—integrating with local buses, rail services, and seven park-and-ride sites.
