Elections in Sweden: A Comprehensive Overview

Elections in Sweden are held every four years on the second Sunday of September (since 2014; previously the third Sunday), covering the 349-seat national parliament (Riksdag), 20 regional councils, and 290 municipal assemblies simultaneously. The most recent general election took place on 11 September 2022, with the next scheduled for 13 September 2026, while European Parliament elections occur separately every five years in June (last held on 9 June 2024).

For national elections, voters must be Swedish citizens, at least 18 years old, and have previously been registered residents of Sweden; however, local elections are open to all registered residents 18+, including citizens of Norway, Iceland, and EU countries (with others eligible after three years of permanent residency). Notably, Sweden does not disenfranchise prisoners or those with criminal convictions, and expatriate Swedes must renew their voter registration every ten years to remain on the rolls.

The voting system is highly distinctive: each party provides its own ballot papers, color-coded by election type—yellow for national, blue for regional, and white for municipal/EU elections. Voters can choose a party-only ballot or a candidate list ballot, using an open-list system with optional preference voting, while parties may form apparentment cartels to maximize seat allocation.
