Stephon Marbury (born February 20, 1977) is an American former basketball player and coach who found his greatest team success overseas. Nicknamed "Starbury," he was a high school phenom in Brooklyn, winning New York State Mr. Basketball honors, and played one season at Georgia Tech before being selected fourth overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, who immediately traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Ray Allen's draft rights. During his 13-year NBA career (ending in 2009), he earned two All-Star selections, played for five teams, and famously demanded a trade from Minnesota in 1999, reportedly due to jealousy over Kevin Garnett's new contract and a desire to leave the city. He then revitalized his career in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), winning three championships, earning the 2015 Finals MVP, and making three All-Star Games before retiring in 2018, later coaching the Beijing Royal Fighters from 2019 to 2023. Notably, he was also the subject of the acclaimed book The Last Shot during his high school days, chronicling his early basketball journey.
