Uhm Jung-hwa (born 1969) is a South Korean singer, actress, and dancer, celebrated as the "Korean Madonna" for her impactful career and reinventions across the entertainment industry. She debuted as a singer in 1993 and rose to stardom in the 1990s with dance hits like "Rose of Betrayal" and "Festival". After pivoting to acting in 2001, she won Best Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards for Marriage Is a Crazy Thing (2002) and Dancing Queen (2012). Her music later explored electronica and funk—earning the Best Dance and Electronic Album award at the Korean Music Awards for Prestige —before a decade-long hiatus ended with the 2017 album The Cloud Dream of the Nine. Despite enduring her father's death in 1974 and subsequent financial struggles, she overcame hardship to become a monumental figure in Korean entertainment.
