The term "Hawaiian" has several distinct meanings, most notably referring to Native Hawaiians, the indigenous Polynesian people of the Hawaiian Islands, though outside of the islands it can also colloquially refer to any resident of the state. It is also the name of the Hawaiian language, a Polynesian tongue originally spoken across the archipelago's eight major islands. Historically, the word was applied to various political eras, including the Kingdom of Hawaii (1795–1893), the short-lived Republic of Hawaii, and the Territory of Hawaii (1898–1959) when it was a U.S. territory—as well as the earlier "Sandwich Islands" moniker from the late 18th century. In modern culture, the term is famously attached to Hawaiian Airlines and the popular Hawaiian pizza, which is topped with pineapple. This rich blend of ethnic, linguistic, historical, and even culinary meanings makes "Hawaiian" a uniquely multifaceted word.
