The Alcorn State Braves are the college football team representing Alcorn State University, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Since joining the SWAC in 1962, the program has claimed 13 conference championships and an impressive five Black college football national titles, cementing its legacy as a historically significant HBCU powerhouse. The Braves have made four total playoff appearances (three in FCS and one in Division II) and boast a fierce rivalry with Jackson State in the annual Soul Bowl game. The program has produced over 50 NFL alumni, including legendary quarterback Steve McNair and Hall of Fame coach Marino Casem. After a history of 21 head coaches, the team was most recently led by Fred McNair, though some wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons were vacated due to NCAA violations. With a rich tradition dating back to the early 20th century, Alcorn State remains a cornerstone of Black college football excellence.
