The 2025–26 European windstorm season, the eleventh year of the continent's coordinated severe weather naming programme, began on 1 September 2025 and will run through 31 August 2026. This year features several regional partnerships, including the Western Group (UK, Ireland, Netherlands) continuing its seventh year of collaboration, and the South-western Group (Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, and now Luxembourg for the first time) marking its ninth. A notable change occurred on 1 January 2026, when the Northern Group (Norway, Sweden, Denmark) adopted a predetermined list of names for the first time. Naming criteria vary by region—for instance, the Western group typically names a storm when it triggers amber or orange warnings for widespread gusts over 110 km/h, while Greece uses a lower threshold of 50 km/h over land. The Central and Eastern Mediterranean groups (including Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus) entered their fifth year, with the Eastern group starting its season on 1 October 2025. Though the Free University of Berlin names pressure systems, official storm names are assigned by meteorological agencies primarily to enhance public awareness and preparedness for severe wind impacts across the continent.
