Waymo is an American autonomous driving company headquartered in Mountain View, California, and a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (Google's parent company). As of June 2026, it operates public commercial robotaxi services in 10 US metropolitan areas, with 3,871 robotaxis in service, providing 500,000 paid rides weekly and having logged 200 million fully autonomous miles. The company traces its roots to Stanford University's DARPA Grand Challenge teams and Google's self-driving project, which began in January 2009 and was spun out as Waymo in December 2016; in October 2020, Waymo became the first company to offer public rides without safety drivers. Led by co-CEOs Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov, the company raised $11 billion by 2024 and an additional $16 billion in February 2026, valuing it at $126 billion. However, in January 2026, the NTSB and NHTSA opened investigations into Waymo's robotaxis following recurring incidents of illegally passing school buses and a crash in which a robotaxi struck a child in a school zone.
