The College Football Playoff (CFP) is an annual bracket competition to determine the national champion of NCAA Division I FBS football, debuting in 2014 with a four-team format and replacing the former Bowl Championship Series (BCS). Unlike the old system, which relied on polls and computer rankings, a 13-member selection committee now picks and seeds the participants, making the CFP the first major selector to crown its champion via a true knockout tournament. After four-team play from 2014 to 2023, the CFP expanded to 12 teams in 2024 (voted in 2023), a structure set to last through the 2026 season, with possible further growth to 14 or more teams afterwards. The new format features a home-stadium first round for the higher seeds, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals rotated among the six New Year's Six bowl games—Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose, and Sugar—before a neutral-site championship game. The winner receives the freshly commissioned CFP National Championship Trophy, designed to avoid ties to past trophies like the AFCA's "crystal football," while the playoff is administered by CFP Administration, LLC, representing all FBS conferences and the University of Notre Dame.
