Sean Michael Murphy (born October 4, 1994) is an American professional baseball catcher for the Atlanta Braves, who was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 2016 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 2019. Renowned for his defensive skills, he won a Gold Glove Award with the Athletics in 2021, and notably hit the first home run in Las Vegas Ballpark history during his minor league stint. In December 2022, he was traded to Atlanta in a three-team deal, signed a six-year, $73 million contract extension, and immediately became an All-Star starter in the 2023 season, setting career highs with 21 home runs and 68 RBIs. Unfortunately, his tenure with the Braves has been plagued by injuries, including a left oblique strain in 2024, a fractured rib in early 2025, and a season-ending torn hip labrum that required surgery in September 2025. He also suffered a fractured finger in May 2026, but returned to action in August, demonstrating resilience with a standout comeback game in April 2025 where he hit a home run and drove in four runs. Despite the physical setbacks that have limited his production (batting around .193–.199 in recent seasons), Murphy remains highly regarded for his elite glove and power at the catcher position.
