In 2026, a highly controversial renovation ordered by President Donald Trump resurfaced the pool with a blue polyurea coating and installed a nanobubbler filtration system—yet the coating began peeling almost immediately and an algal bloom occurred. Despite Trump's claims of vandalism, the U.S. Justice Department later admitted in a legal filing that the renovation was "hasty and botched" and that the damage was not caused by sabotage.
