The PlayStation Network (PSN) is Sony Interactive Entertainment's digital media service, launched in November 2006 for PlayStation consoles, smartphones, and other devices. It offers an online marketplace (PlayStation Store), a premium subscription (PlayStation Plus, introduced in 2010), music streaming (via Spotify), and previously the cloud-gaming service PlayStation Now (folded into Plus Premium in June 2022). Conceived as a unified online service for the PlayStation 3, it succeeded the fragmented online support of the PlayStation 2 and was formally unveiled in March 2006. The network endured a major security breach in April 2011, forcing a 23-day outage that impacted 77 million accounts and leading Sony to offer a "Welcome Back" compensation program. Subsequently, Sony converted PSN accounts to Sony Entertainment Network in February 2012 and acquired Gaikai for $380 million, using that technology to launch PlayStation Now in 2014.
