Beşiktaş is a compact yet highly significant district on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey, covering 18 km² with a population of 175,190. Despite its small size, it serves as the country's leading financial center, is home to historic landmarks like Dolmabahçe Palace, and hosts the powerhouse Beşiktaş sports club and its stadium. The district's name means "cradle stone," likely stemming from a Byzantine church (Kounopetra) that held a relic from Christ's nativity, though another tale credits Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha's five mooring pillars. Settled as early as Constantine the Great's reign (306–337 CE), it was historically called Diplokionion ("double pillar"), and its twin columns later inspired the famous pillars of Venice.
