Club Deportivo Olimpia is Honduras's most successful professional football club, based in Tegucigalpa, with an incredible 40 domestic league titles to its name. They are also the only Honduran team to have won the CONCACAF Champions Cup twice, claiming the trophy in 1972 and 1988, and have represented Honduras in international play more than any other club. Interestingly, the club was founded on June 12, 1912, as a baseball team called Nacional Olimpia—named in honor of the ancient Olympic Games—before transitioning fully to football in 1917. In its early years, Olimpia dominated the regional Liga Morazán and ignited legendary rivalries, including the Clásico Nacional against Marathón and the Superclásico against Motagua. After winning its first national amateur championship in 1957 (a total of seven amateur titles), the club entered the professional era and secured its first professional league title in the 1966–67 season under coach Mario Griffin Cubas.
