The Porsche 911, launched in September 1964, was initially called the 901 until a legal protest from Peugeot forced its iconic rename, and it has since become one of the most successful sports cars ever. Designed by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche as a larger successor to the 356, it has retained its signature rear-mounted flat-six engine and 2+2 seating across eight generations, evolving from air-cooled setups to water-cooled engines with the 996 series in 1998. On the track, the 911 family dominated, with the Carrera RSR winning the Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona in the mid-1970s, and the turbocharged 935 taking the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, securing Porsche the World Championship for Makes four years straight (1976–1979). Culturally, it ranked fifth in the 1999 Car of the Century poll, and the one millionth example was built in May 2017, now kept in Porsche's permanent collection. Early on, the model also inspired the Porsche 912 (1965), a more affordable four-cylinder variant that bridged the gap while the outgoing 356 was phased out.
