Speedtest.net is a free web service operated by Ookla that measures internet connection performance, including download/upload speeds and latency. Founded in 2006 by Mike Apgar and Doug Suttles (who named the company after his cat from the TV show Thundarr the Barbarian), the service now uses over 16,000 dispersed servers and had completed over 52.3 billion tests as of February 2024. Originally built in Flash, it transitioned to an HTML5 version in January 2018 and now uses a custom TCP socket protocol for greater accuracy. After claiming an 80% market share by 2011, Ookla was acquired by Ziff Davis in 2014, had Speedtest blocked in Russia on 30 July 2025, and was sold to Accenture in 2026. Its detailed global statistics are frequently used by publications to analyze worldwide internet access speeds.
