The Texas Ranger Division (nicknamed Diablos Tejanos) is a statewide investigative law enforcement agency based in Austin, Texas, handling everything from murder and public corruption to modern cybercrime and tactical support in major emergencies. Unofficially created by Stephen F. Austin in 1823 and formally constituted in 1835, the Rangers have been a division of the Texas Department of Public Safety since 1935, with 166 commissioned members as of 2019. Throughout history, they have played pivotal roles in Texas lore, including thwarting an assassination plot against Presidents Taft and Díaz in El Paso and pursuing infamous outlaws like John Wesley Hardin, Sam Bass, and Bonnie and Clyde. Their legendary status has heavily influenced pop culture, inspiring the fictional Lone Ranger, the TV series Walker, Texas Ranger, and the name of the MLB team the Texas Rangers. Legally protected against disbandment, their legacy is preserved at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, cementing their place in the mythology of the Wild West.
