La Aurora International Airport, serving Guatemala City, is the fourth-busiest airport in Central America and sits just south of the capital. It features a 2,987-meter runway and exclusive VIP lounges, and it made history in October 2004 when Iberia launched a nonstop route to Madrid. The airport was forced to close for six months in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its history includes several notable runway overruns, such as the 1993 TACA Flight 510 incident, which surprisingly caused no fatalities. More tragically, the 1995 Faucett Flight 705 crash killed six people on the ground, and the 1999 Cubana de Aviación Flight 1216 crash killed 18 people when a DC-10 overshot the runway into a residential area.
