Stocks
Stocks are a historic restraining device used for corporal punishment and public humiliation, with origins traced back to Classical Athens and Solon's law code. Unlike the standing pillory, stocks held offenders in a seated position by locking boards around their ankles (and sometimes wrists), leaving them vulnerable to insults, kicks, and even foot tickling. They were a common sight from medieval times onward, mandated in English towns by the Statute of Labourers in 1351, and heavily used by early American Puritans to punish the "lower class." Their last recorded use in the United Kingdom was on 11 June 1872 in Newbury, Berkshire, and they have never been formally abolished. Surprisingly, stocks have seen modern revivals, such as in Colombia in 2012 for adultery, in 2020 for breaking COVID-19 quarantine, and a proposed installation in Thame, UK, in 2016.
