On May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six killed Osama bin Laden during Operation Neptune Spear at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in a raid approved by President Barack Obama and launched from Afghanistan. Bin Laden, the al-Qaeda founder who orchestrated the September 11 attacks, had evaded capture since escaping to Pakistan after the Battle of Tora Bora in 2001, and was finally located through a CIA-led effort tracking a courier. The 40-minute mission involved two dozen SEALs in Black Hawk helicopters, resulted in the deaths of bin Laden and four others, and included a helicopter crash with no U.S. casualties; his body was later buried at sea. The killing was supported by over 90% of Americans and welcomed by the UN, EU, and NATO, but was condemned by two-thirds of Pakistanis and questioned by Amnesty International over the failure to capture the unarmed bin Laden alive. A subsequent Pakistani commission, the Abbottabad Commission Report, found a "collective failure" of the country's military and intelligence agencies, and the report was later leaked to Al Jazeera in 2013. Artifacts from the raid are now displayed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum and the Obama Presidential Center.
