Fútbol Club Motagua is one of Honduras's most successful and renowned professional football clubs, based in Tegucigalpa and competing in the top-tier Liga Nacional. Founded on 29 August 1928 from the merger of three struggling clubs (América, Honduras Atlética, and Águila), the team was named after a nearby river and played its first match that November. After debuting professionally in the 1965–66 season, Motagua won its first championship in 1968–69 under manager Rodolfo Godoy, completing a double with the Honduran Cup and beginning a dominant run through the 1970s. Following a title drought from 1979 to 1992, the club returned to glory and racked up numerous championships in the 1990s and 2000s, often defeating rivals Olimpia. A new golden age began in 2013 under coach Diego Vásquez, who led the team to titles in the 2014 Apertura and the 2016–17 season, cementing its legacy. The club plays its home games at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés and has consistently been a powerhouse in Honduran football.
