Tommy "Egghead" Refenes is an American video game designer and programmer best known for co-creating the hit platformer Super Meat Boy with designer Edmund McMillen. A self-taught coder who started programming at age 11, he dropped out of North Carolina State University and is a Type 1 diabetic, a detail revealed in the documentary Indie Game: The Movie. After working at several studios, he co-founded Team Meat in 2009, though McMillen left the company in 2017; Refenes later served as lead programmer on the sequel Super Meat Boy Forever (2020) without him. In 2010, he sparked controversy at the Game Developers Conference by harshly criticizing Apple's App Store, which led to the removal of his satirical game Zits & Giggles and prompted him to release the intentionally crude parody Super Meat Boy Handheld. His earlier career also included winning a prize for the canceled game Goo! with his studio Pillowfort, showcasing his long history of irreverent and experimental game design.
