Bakers Square is a casual dining chain in the U.S. known for its pies, though it also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Currently owned by BBQ Holdings, the chain has shrunk to just 7 locations across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio as of June 2025. Its history began in 1969 with a single Des Moines, Iowa, restaurant called Mrs. C's, which was later bought by Pillsbury, renamed Poppin' Fresh Pies, and then acquired by VICORP in 1983 and rebranded as Bakers Square. The chain once boasted over 90 locations in California after entering that market in 1984 via the Sambo's acquisition, competing directly with Marie Callender's and Coco's. However, a declining economy and parent company VICORP's Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008 led to massive closures, particularly in California, before the brand was acquired by American Blue Ribbon Holdings in 2009. Today, its remaining pie production facilities in Illinois and Minnesota (now "Legendary Baking") continue to support the brand's legacy.
