Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic, handling over 95.2 million passengers, 2.2 million tonnes of cargo, and 454,000 aircraft movements in 2025. Located just 4.7 km east of Dubai’s center, it is the primary hub for Emirates and Flydubai, serving over 270 destinations via more than 100 airlines, with Terminal 3 being the largest airport terminal globally. The airport was ordered by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1959 and officially opened on 30 September 1960, originally with a compacted-sand runway for aircraft like the Douglas DC-3. In 2014, it contributed over US$26.7 billion to Dubai's economy, supporting 400,000 jobs, and in 2019 it installed the region's largest airport solar energy system. However, DXB is planned to eventually close and be superseded by the expanded Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) as Dubai's primary air hub.
