Internationally, they reached the Champions League group stage for a Portuguese-record ninth consecutive time, but a domestic-record five straight home losses in the competition saw them finish third and drop into the Europa League, where they advanced to the quarter-finals. Domestically, the campaign began poorly under coach Rui Vitória, culminating in a 2–0 defeat to Portimonense on 2 January 2019 that left them fourth, seven points off the top, and led to his dismissal. Caretaker Bruno Lage took over and sparked a remarkable turnaround, winning several league matches and guiding the team to the Taça de Portugal quarter-finals (though they lost the Taça da Liga semi-final to Porto). Under Lage, Benfica surged back to the top of the table, ultimately securing the championship on the final day—a stunning recovery from a mid-season crisis.
