Hyrox is an indoor fitness racing competition founded by Olympic field hockey champion Moritz Fürste and Christian Toetzke, with the first event held in Hamburg, Germany, in April 2018. The standardized format challenges athletes to complete eight 1-kilometer runs, each followed by a distinct functional station—such as sled pushes, rowing, burpee broad jumps, and wall balls—allowing for global leaderboards and comparisons. Billed as "The World Series of Fitness Racing," it has exploded in popularity, growing from 650 initial participants to 175,000 competitors across 65 races in 2023, with over 5,000 affiliated gyms established by the end of 2024. The sport has attracted major sponsors like Red Bull and Puma, and the 2023–2024 World Championship offered a $150,000 prize purse, with the individual winner taking home $25,000. While typically held in indoor exhibition halls, Hyrox has expanded to outdoor venues, including a fully equipped outdoor gym in Lanzarote, Spain, in 2024, and introduced a relay event for the World Championships in Nice, France.
