In March 2020, Israeli actress Gal Gadot organized a star-studded video of celebrities singing John Lennon's "Imagine" to lift morale during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Posted on 18 March, the video was almost universally panned as an ineffective, out-of-touch, and "cringey" response, with The New York Times calling it "an empty and profoundly awkward gesture." Despite the backlash, it amassed 4.5 million views on Instagram within 16 hours, and Gadot later admitted it was in "poor taste" but maintained it was made with "pure intentions." The video inspired a wave of parodies, including a scene in the series The Boys, a comedic version by Joe Lycett replacing lyrics with "bastard," and a musical remix by jazz musician Charles Cornell that exposed the singers' lack of key and rhythm coordination. Additional parodies came from John Mayer (inserting Ariana Grande's "Imagine") and a Mr. Show reunion featuring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross singing "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Eat It."
