Welles Remy Crowther (1977–2001), an equities trader and volunteer firefighter, earned the posthumous nickname "The Man in the Red Bandana" for heroically saving as many as 18 lives during the September 11 attacks before dying in the South Tower collapse. After calling his mother at 9:12 a.m. from his office on the 104th floor, he descended to the 78th-floor sky lobby, where he used the red bandana his father gave him as a child to cover his face, guiding survivors down a working stairwell and carrying a woman on his back. Crowther repeatedly returned upstairs to rescue and organize others, administering first aid and shouting, "Everyone who can stand, stand now," until he was last seen with firefighters just before the tower fell at 9:59 a.m. His body was found in March 2002 alongside emergency workers, and his family remained unaware of his deeds until his mother read a survivor's account in The New York Times in May 2002, which led to eyewitnesses confirming his identity. A completed FDNY application found in his home underscored his lifelong ambition to serve, cementing his legacy as a symbol of selfless courage.
