On June 13, 2022, a massive supercell towering to an extreme 60,000–70,000 ft struck the Chicago metropolitan area, forming part of a larger storm complex that also produced a violent derecho across Indiana and Ohio. The storm unleashed destructive downburst winds exceeding 80 mph (130 km/h), causing $3.4 billion in total damage and severely disrupting travel at O'Hare International Airport, which recorded an 84 mph gust (its joint strongest) and saw 584 flight delays and 96 cancellations. Fueled by extreme atmospheric instability with CAPE values above 5,000 J/kg, the system prompted the Storm Prediction Center to issue a Moderate (4/5) risk outlook. In Chicago, tornado sirens blared during a Cubs game at Wrigley Field (delayed by an hour and 25 minutes), while over 67,000 ComEd customers lost power across the region. The event coincided with a brutal heat wave—hitting a 115°F heat index in Joliet—and produced two brief, weak tornadoes. In the aftermath, suburban leaders signed a climate initiative memorandum, and a passenger later sued American Airlines over extreme turbulence experienced on a flight landing during the storm.
