The upcoming Harry Potter television series, developed for HBO, is a reboot of the film franchise based on J.K. Rowling's books. The main cast features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione, with John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Snape. Development began in January 2021, and after considering 40,000 actors, the trio was announced in May 2025, with filming starting that July at Leavesden Studios. The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on 25 December 2026, and a second season adapting Chamber of Secrets has already been renewed. Led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, the series is planned as a decade-long, faithful adaptation of the books.
