Thomas Linton Metzger (1938–2020) was a prominent American white supremacist, neo-Nazi leader, and Ku Klux Klan figure who founded the neo-Nazi organization White Aryan Resistance (WAR) in 1983. Rising through the ranks of the KKK in the 1970s, he served as the Grand Dragon of California before splitting from David Duke's faction, and he was a vocal opponent of immigration who advocated for the "Third Position" ideology. His most infamous legacy stems from a 1990 civil lawsuit in which he, his son, and WAR were held liable for $12.5 million in damages after a skinhead affiliated with the group murdered Mulugeta Seraw, a 28-year-old Ethiopian student, in Portland, Oregon. Born in Indiana and raised primarily by his mother after his biological father abandoned him, Metzger served in the U.S. Army and later worked in electronics before fully embracing extremism, even serving as a Christian Identity pastor before becoming an atheist. Throughout his life, he faced multiple incarcerations, lawsuits, and government inquiries, cementing his status as a highly controversial and legally embattled figure in American hate movements.
