Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Red Wing, Minnesota, was brutally killed in Hopewell, New York, in February 2025 after enduring over a month of horrific torture. The abuse, which spanned from early December 2024 to February 2025, included beatings, rape with objects, denial of food and water, and being forced to consume urine and feces, before his body was discovered in a Yates County field on February 13. Seven suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 38—including his online girlfriend Precious Arzuaga—were arrested and charged with second-degree murder with depraved indifference. New York State Police Captain Kelly Swift called it "one of the most horrific crimes" she had investigated, though the Ontario County District Attorney stated there was no evidence it was a hate crime, noting the assailants identified as LGBTQ+. Nordquist's family had lost touch with him after January 1, 2025, and had previously requested wellness checks that were declined by local police. In his legacy, a scholarship and memorial garden have been established at his alma mater, Face to Face Academy in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
