The Washington Spirit are a professional women's soccer team based in Washington, D.C., competing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and carrying on the legacy of D.C. United Women. Founded in 2012 and debuting in 2013, the team has evolved from a last-place inaugural season into a powerhouse, reaching the NWSL Championship four times (2016, 2021, 2024, and 2025) and capturing its first title in 2021. Early struggles under coach Mike Jorden led to a mid-season switch to Mark Parsons, under whom the team secured its first playoff berth in 2014 and saw Crystal Dunn clinch the 2015 Golden Boot with 15 goals.
