The chaos was ignited by a chain of retaliatory beanballs, starting when Atlanta's Pascual Pérez hit Alan Wiggins with the game's first pitch, prompting Padres pitchers Ed Whitson, Greg Booker, and Craig Lefferts to repeatedly throw at Pérez. The tension exploded in the eighth inning when Lefferts finally struck Pérez in the elbow, triggering a 10-minute bench-clearing melee, during which a fan leaped from the stands onto Padres' Champ Summers as he charged toward the Braves' dugout.
