Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, was a 690-megawatt boiling water reactor that once supplied about 14% of the state's electricity before its closure. Built by Boston Edison in 1972 and later sold to Entergy in 1999, the plant had a troubled history, including a 1986 emergency shutdown that led the NRC to call it "one of the worst-run" nuclear plants in the country. In 2012, the NRC extended its license to 2032, but citing high costs for safety upgrades, Entergy announced in 2015 that it would close the plant, which officially shut down on May 31, 2019. A dramatic 2013 incident saw a feedwater pump failure cause the reactor water level to drop to a record low, automatically triggering the emergency core cooling systems for the first time in the plant's history. After closure, Entergy sold the station to Holtec International in 2019, which is now decommissioning the site—a process expected to take decades while spent nuclear fuel remains stored on-site.
