Open Water (film)

Open Water is a 2003 American independent survival horror film loosely based on the true disappearance of Tom and Eileen Lonergan. The plot follows a couple (Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis) who are accidentally left behind by their dive boat, becoming stranded in shark-infested waters. Made for just $500,000 by husband-and-wife team Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, the film was shot on digital video using real sharks to achieve authentic behavior. After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Lions Gate acquired it for $2.5 million and spent $8 million on marketing, ultimately grossing $55.5 million worldwide. The film received mostly positive reviews, holding a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is remembered for its stark, realistic ending where the couple's camera is later found inside a shark's stomach.
