IonQ is an American quantum computing company headquartered in College Park, Maryland, that develops general-purpose trapped ion quantum computers and software. Founded in 2015 by professors Christopher Monroe and Jungsang Kim, the company grew out of 25 years of academic research, including Monroe's pioneering work at NIST that produced the first controllable qubits and quantum logic gates. After making its quantum computers available on major cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, IonQ went public in October 2021 via a SPAC merger, raising $636 million, and opened what it calls the first quantum computing factory in the U.S. in Bothell, Washington, in February 2024. The company has seen significant leadership changes, with former Amazon Prime executive Peter Chapman leading it through its public debut before physicist Niccolò de Masi took over as CEO in February 2025. In August 2026, IonQ's Space Division secured a contract with the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office for its Radar Commercial Augmentation program, highlighting its expansion into defense and space applications.
