James "Whitey" Bulger, the Irish mob boss who led Boston's Winter Hill Gang, was born in 1929 and became one of America's most notorious criminals. After secretly informing for the FBI against his Mafia rivals, he was tipped off by his corrupt handler John Connolly and fled in 1994, remaining at large for 16 years—ranking second only to Osama bin Laden on the FBI's Most Wanted list—until his capture in Santa Monica, California, in 2011. In 2013, he was convicted on 31 counts, including complicity in 11 murders, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
