Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, formerly known as Premier Parks and headquartered in Arlington, Texas, was a major amusement park operator that hosted 32.8 million visitors across 27 properties in 2019, ranking seventh globally in attendance. Founded by Angus G. Wynne in the 1960s and named after its first park, Six Flags Over Texas (a reference to the six nations that governed Texas), the company grew by acquiring iconic parks like AstroWorld, Great Adventure, and Magic Mountain. After being owned by Time Warner from 1993 to 1998, the company was sold to Premier Parks, which adopted the Six Flags name, and it later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009 before successfully restructuring in 2010. In a landmark move, Six Flags and Cedar Fair announced an $8 billion merger in November 2023, which was finalized on July 1, 2024, dissolving both companies to create a new Six Flags Entertainment Corporation operating 42 properties across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Under the merger terms, Six Flags shareholders received a 48.8% minority stake in the combined entity, marking one of the largest consolidations in the amusement park industry.
