Attila was a short-lived American rock duo from New York City, formed in 1969 by Billy Joel and Jon Small after leaving the Hassles, featuring a unique instrumentation of only organ and drums. Their sole self-titled album, released on July 27, 1970, was a loud, heavy metal experiment that failed to chart, with Joel himself later dismissing it as "psychedelic bullshit". The partnership imploded in 1970 when Joel ran off with Small's wife, Elizabeth (whom Joel later married), though the two continued to collaborate professionally, with Small later directing several of Joel's concert videos. The album received infamously harsh reviews, with AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine calling it "the worst album released in the history of rock & roll," while the band's extreme volume reportedly drove audiences out of clubs. Despite its initial failure, the music found a second life, as the track "Amplifier Fire, Part 1 (Godzilla)" was included on Joel's 2005 box set My Lives, and two songs appeared on a 2025 film soundtrack.
