Tosh Lupoi (born July 22, 1981) is the current head football coach at the University of California, Berkeley, returning to his alma mater where he was a defensive lineman from 2000 to 2005. After starting his coaching career at Cal as a graduate assistant and defensive line coach, he earned a reputation as an elite recruiter, being named Rivals.com's National Recruiter of the Year in 2010, though he was also suspended that year for instructing a player to fake an injury. His controversial 2012 move to the University of Washington under Steve Sarkisian caused top recruits like five-star Shaq Thompson to flip their commitments, and his tenure there was marked by a recruiting violation investigation (of which he was acquitted) and publicly released extravagant bar tabs. From 2014 to 2018, Lupoi found major success at Alabama, serving as defensive coordinator and helping the Crimson Tide win national titles in 2015 and 2017 while leading the nation in scoring defense in 2016 and 2017, and coaching future first-round NFL picks like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jonathan Allen. After brief NFL stints with the Cleveland Browns (2019), Atlanta Falcons (2020), and Jacksonville Jaguars (2021), he returned to college football as Oregon's defensive coordinator in 2022. Now back at Cal, Lupoi's career has come full circle, bringing his championship experience and recruiting prowess to the Bears.
