The Los Angeles Angels are a professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California, competing in the American League West division of MLB. Established in 1961, the team has played at Angel Stadium since 1966, with its name derived from the original city of Los Angeles and a minor league club. Before the Angels, several attempts to relocate an American League team to Los Angeles failed, and the National League's Dodgers moved there in 1958, initially blocking AL expansion. In 1960, to counter the proposed Continental League, MLB expanded, and the AL placed a franchise in Los Angeles for 1961. The franchise was famously secured by Gene Autry, the singing cowboy and media mogul, after bids by Hank Greenberg and Bill Veeck were blocked by Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, who objected to Veeck. Autry named the team the Los Angeles Angels, a name that dates back to 1892.
