Regal Entertainment Group, operating as Regal Cinemas, is the second-largest movie theater chain in the United States, with 5,720 screens across 420 theaters as of December 2024. Founded on August 10, 1989 in Knoxville, Tennessee, it operates under three main brands—Regal Cinemas, Edwards Theatres, and United Artists Theatres—though most new locations are built under the Regal name. The company expanded rapidly through acquisitions, including a major merger with Act III Theatres in 1998, but overexpansion led to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2001, after which it merged with the Edwards and United Artists chains. Its United Artists brand has deep historical roots, tracing back to 1924 and the legendary founders of the UA movie studio (Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D. W. Griffith), though it was always legally separate. In a landmark deal on December 5, 2017, British chain Cineworld acquired Regal for $3.6 billion, creating the world's second-largest theater exhibitor behind AMC Theatres.
