Derry Girls is a period teen sitcom created by Lisa McGee, inspired by her own upbringing in an Irish Catholic family in Derry during the final years of the Troubles. Premiering on Channel 4 on 4 January 2018, the series follows five teenagers—played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn—as they attend a fictional Catholic girls' school in mid-1990s Northern Ireland. The show became Channel 4's most successful comedy since Father Ted and set a record as the most-watched series in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002. Its plotlines cleverly incorporate real historical events, including the 1994 IRA ceasefire, the Clintons' 1995 visit, and the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, featuring archival footage and era-appropriate music. After three series—with the final one delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic—the show concluded with a special extended episode titled "The Agreement" on 18 May 2022, set during the signing of that historic accord. Its lasting legacy includes a famous mural of the main characters in Derry, which has become a popular tourist attraction.
