The Maryland State Fair is an annual 11-day event held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds near Timonium in Baltimore County, running from late August through Labor Day. Its origins trace back to 1878 when Grafton Marsh Bosley hosted a benefit near Towson, leading to a move to the current Timonium site in 1879; the fair formally gained its name in 1906 after the Lutherville and Pimlico fairs merged. The event was suspended from 1943–1945 during World War II, with the grounds used as a U.S. Army depot, but reopened in 1946 and expanded to 11 days in 1999. Early attractions included livestock shows, plowing contests, horse races (with results sent by carrier pigeon), and amusements like sack races, alongside the notable 1918 airmail delivery. Over time, visitors transitioned from the Northern Central Railroad and electric streetcars to cars and buses, cementing the fair as a beloved regional tradition.
