Hurricane Lala made history as the first hurricane to directly hit Hawaii's Big Island since 1871, and it became the third-wettest tropical cyclone on record for the state. Forming on August 12, 2026, from a tropical wave, Lala strengthened into a hurricane on August 15, grazed the Big Island, and briefly weakened before re-intensifying into a powerful Category 4 hurricane on August 19 with winds of 130 mph (215 km/h). The long-lived storm persisted over the open Pacific until August 28, when it degenerated into a remnant low and crossed the international date line. The storm prompted a state of emergency on August 13, unleashing torrential rainfall, flash flooding, and strong gusts that downed power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and damaging or destroying over 100 homes. At least four fatalities were attributed to Lala as of August 22.
