The Nintendo Switch, released worldwide on March 3, 2017, is a hybrid video game console that functions as both a home console via a docking station and a portable tablet device. Its innovative detachable Joy-Con controllers support motion sensing and tactile feedback, while games are sold on physical cartridges and digitally via the eShop without region locking. Developed after the commercial failure of the Wii U and under the strategic direction of the late president Satoru Iwata, the console uses an Nvidia Tegra chipset to simplify development for third-party studios. Two major hardware revisions followed: the handheld-only Switch Lite (September 20, 2019) and a premium OLED model (October 8, 2021). Critically praised for its concept and library, the Switch became a massive commercial success, shipping over 155 million units by December 2025, making it the second-best-selling console ever behind the PlayStation 2. Its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, which is backward compatible with most Switch games, was released on June 5, 2025.
