He is best known for owning both the Buffalo Sabres (NHL) and the Buffalo Bills (NFL), purchasing the Sabres in February 2011 for $189 million and the Bills in September 2014. His business success came from founding East Resources, which he sold to Royal Dutch Shell for approximately $4.7 billion, along with other asset sales. Despite his famous promise to win a Stanley Cup, the Sabres have struggled under his ownership, enduring the longest active NHL playoff drought and trading away stars like Jack Eichel, who later won championships elsewhere.
